Probe incident involving distribution of food coupons, EC urged

SEREMBAN: The Election Commission (EC) has been urged to conduct a probe on Pakatan Harapan's Rantau by-election candidate Dr S. Streram (pic), who was present at an event where free food coupons were given out to pupils in five schools in the constituency.

Negri Sembilan MCA chief Siow Koi Voon said the investigation should be completed within seven days and before the Rantau by-election on April 13.

"Even Bersih has questioned the presentation of food coupons worth RM75,000 to the needy students by Miri MP Dr Michael Teo who was apparently asked to do so by Dr Streram.

"We want the EC to tell us if this is an election offence and, if it is, to act against him," he told reporters at the MCA operations centre in Rantau.

Siow said the EC should explain if Dr Streram had committed an offence under Section 8 of the Election Offences Act 1954 or any other provision.

When asked, Dr Streram said it was not an offence to do so as the coupons were given to children who were not voters.

He also said the coupons were given out on March 28, which was two days before nomination day.

To this, Siow said such a move could certainly influence parents.

"Wouldn't you be happy if I bought your kids presents or gave them money?

"Although the act is noble, we in the MCA still think this is an offence," he added.

Siow expressed hope the EC would look into the matter and not remain silent.

"Our state legal bureau is in the process of writing to the Commission, and we will wait for their reply," he added.
