Woman detained for allegedly abusing stepdaughter in Batu Caves

PETALING JAYA: A woman was arrested for allegedly abusing her seven-year-old stepdaughter after a video of her kicking the child went viral on social media.

Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said the woman, 30, was picked up by police at a restaurant on Jalan Sungai Tua, Batu Caves around 5pm on Thursday.

"We believe that she had abused the child at an apartment at Taman Raintree, Batu Caves.

"Our investigation showed that she had abused the girl to vent her frustrations against her husband," he said in a statement on Thursday (March 28), adding that the couple were divorced early this year.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

A person convicted of harming a child physically or emotionally under the Act faces face a maximum fine of RM20,000 or a jail term of not more than 10 years or both.
