MIRI: The Miri Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has issued an advisory to community leaders to play a role in the battle against raging wildfires in the area.
"Community leaders such as the heads of kampungs and longhouses must get their voluntary firefighters to fight whatever small wildfires they come across," said Miri fire chief Supt Law Poh Kiong.
"The fires must be doused before they burn out of control.
"These community leaders must also be very strict in making sure their villagers do not carry out any open burning," he said on Thursday (March 21).
Supt Law said firefighters were working very hard to douse the wildfires before they cause more air pollution.
Statistics on Thursday morning showed that some 330 acres of wildfires had been dealt with by firefighters throughout the state.
There have been 176 official reports of bushfires and forest fires statewide to date, it added.
