NIBONG TEBAL: A wanted criminal was killed in a shoot-out with police at an oil palm estate along Jalan Tasek near here.

Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainol Samah said the suspect was driving a car when he crossed paths with a police patrol car on crime prevention rounds along Jalan Tasek-Valdor at about 3.30am on Wednesday (March 20).

He said the driver started behaving suspiciously upon seeing the policemen and sped off.

"The policemen in the patrol car immediately gave chase," said SAC Zainol.

He said the suspect drove into an oil palm estate and upon reaching a dead end, he got out of the car and immediately started shooting at the policemen.

SAC Zainol said police were forced to fire several shots in self-defence and fatally shot him.

He said a semi-automatic 9mm gun with seven bullets were recovered at the scene and the car driven by the suspect was reported stolen in Jitra, Kedah on Feb 2.
