Bomoh gets 88 months’ jail and rotan for cheating

KOTA KINABALU: A bomoh was sentenced to 88 months jail and four strokes of the rotan, after he admitted that he cheated two people in Sandakan of RM25,000 in their bid to get rid of evil spirits.

Magistrate Suhailah Selag imposed the sentence, after the 32-year-old bomoh Isnin Usin, better known as Bomoh Acong, pleaded guilty to cheating a man and woman at Kg Bahagia in Sandakan in Dec last year.

Isnin was slapped with four charges under Sector 420 of the Penal Code for cheating the man and the woman.

According to the facts of the case tendered in court by prosecuting officer Asst Supt Tan Hiap Wah, the man and a woman had suffered losses of RM25,000 in valuables after the bomoh told them to keep it wrapped for seven weeks during their treatment to get rid of bad spirits.

After the seven week “treatment” was over, the victims found that all valuables wrapped in a white cloth had gone missing. They complained to the Kg Bahagia village chief, who in turn advised them to lodge a report against Bomoh Acong on Feb 29 this year.
