PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other Pakatan Harapan leaders unveiling Dr S Streram at an event in Seremban

SEREMBAN: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his gratitude to his Pakatan Harapan allies for agreeing with the party's decision to field Dr S. Streram as the candidate for the Rantau by-election on April 13.

"Pakatan is a coalition that serves all Malaysians, regardless of race unlike, Umno and PAS.

"There were calls to field a Malay candidate just because the Malays form the majority here, but we decided against it and chose to stick with Dr Streram," he said.

Anwar added that Dr Streram has been serving the constituents here, although he was barred by the Election Commission returning officer to file his papers during the May 9 general election.

"As a doctor, he has also volunteered to serve in war ravaged countries like Afghanistan and Sudan, helping Muslims.

"I am confident he will do the same for the people of Rantau if elected," said Anwar, after Pakatan officially unveiled Dr Streram as the candidate before several hundred constituents here on Sunday (March 17).

Several Pakatan leaders, including DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Amanah communications head Khalid Abdul Samad, state Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chief Tan Sri Rais Yatim as well as Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, were present at the event.

Apart from Dr Streram, the other candidate who has confirmed contesting the by-election is Barisan Nasional's Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad, who was former Mentri Besar, has been Rantau assemblyman since 2004.

Nomination will be held on March 30.
