A fun-filled Fiesta for all

PETALING JAYA: SEVENTY-year-old Zaiton Omar took the MRT early from her home in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur to attend The WOW! Fiesta here because she wanted to grab a seat for the morning talks.

“They were all very good but my favourite session was the talk on women and money by celebrity entrepreneur Chui Ling. It was very informative,” said Zaiton, who believes it is never too late the learn about investing and managing one’s money.

The two-day Wow! Fiesta kicked off yesterday, the highlight of The Star Media Group’s WOW-Women Do Wonders campaign that is running for the third year.

The morning session started literally with a juicy talk as La Juiceria founder Anabelle Co-Martinent served the audience her juices as well as her inspiring story of building a brand from scratch.

“Don’t be afraid,” she advised women who want to venture out of their comfort zone.

Chui Ling’s candid talk on women investing smartly won her many fans. 

The next speaker, ParkCity Medical Centre consultant breast and oncoplastic surgeon Dr Tan Gie Hooi, also urged women to not be afraid ... to see a doctor if they detect any abnormalities in their breasts because it could save their lives.

“Breast cancer is the number one killer of women in Malaysia for cancer, but it’s also the most treatable when detected early,” shared Dr Tan, who added that women need to be breast-aware and do regular self-examinations correctly.

Celebrity radio and tv personality Chui Ling debunked the myths on women being bad at money manage­ment, and shared her tips on investing in her talk on “Women and Money” sponsored by Bursa Malaysia Bhd.

The audience lapped up the anecdotes of her gains and losses, and took heed of her advice, “Make your own decisions.”

At the Fiesta launch, popular songstress Nabila Razali entertained the crowd with her hit song Pematah Hati.

Her sensational performance as well as her easy interaction with the crowd won her loud applause. She even gave a shout-out to Zaiton for coming to the Fiesta.

In her speech, Star Media Group’s chief revenue officer Lydia Wang said women represent half the world’s population and are an ­invaluable human capital resource that cannot be ignored.

“Today, while we hear women’s voices at all levels of decision making, we still have a long way to go. Fortunately, we are at an age where there is an ongoing effort to bring balance and equal opportunities based on meritocracy.

“For this, we need a coalition of both enlightened men and women in this race for gender balance,” she said.

Also present at the launch were Bursa Malaysia chief commercial officer Selvarany Rasiah; ParkCity Medical Centre CEO Ch’ng Lin Ling; Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care senior manager Dr Savitha Dharan; Canon president and CEO Andrew Koh; The Starling Mall COO Gavin Chong; and head of marketing for MBO cinemas Vivien Lee.

Radio personality Linora Low and One Championship’s Ann Osman were also wowing the crowd at the Fiesta.

There is also a bazaar with over 100 vendors at the Fiesta, which drew a steady stream of visitors to the fifth floor of the mall throughout the day.

This year marked the second time that Mary Lim Lay Ping and her husband are selling their products – shrimp opae ula terrariums – at the Fiesta.

“I think that events like the WOW! Fiesta empower women and give us an opportunity to bring our ­products to a place where other people can recognise our creativity. It is a unique chance for women to show their talent and develop their business,” said Lim, 36.

Another visitor, Kah Seng, 27, who came to the Fiesta with his girlfriend, said he had never before attended an event that focused solely on empowering women.

ParkCity Medical Centre consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Jaspal Singh Sachdev will be speaking on “Screening Precon­cep­­tions and Beyond”.

Visitors attending the talks will be eligible for lucky draws.
