Police report lodged over video defaming, threatening LGE

GEORGE TOWN: The Inspector-General of Police should immediately investigate the individual behind a video on social media that threatens and defames Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, says Jelutong MP RSN Rayer.

He said the individual posed a serious threat to Lim and urged the police to arrest and charge him in court.

“The safety of our Finance Minister is at stake,” he told reporters after lodging a police report at the Datuk Keramat police station in Penang on Friday (March 15).

“The man in the video gave defamatory statements and posted (statements that constituted) criminal intimidation against our Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also Bagan MP.

The man behind the video reportedly challenged Lim to go to Rantau, threatening to do something to Lim if he saw him there during the by-election campaign.

Rayer added that there were also defamatory statements against Lim, accusing him of evicting residents from Taman Manggis PPR, Penang.

He urged people not to play up racial issues and make defamatory statements.

“Be responsible and do not simply give out defamatory statements, as people who do not know the truth will also make incorrect defamatory statements,” he said.

Meanwhile, Seri Delima Assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid, who was also present, urged the police to take action against the individual in the viral video.

“The video contains defamation elements, and this cannot be ignored.

“The face of the individual can be clearly seen, so there is no reason (to say) we do not know who he is,” she said.

On the Taman Manggis PPR issue, Syerleena said the Chief Minister and related leaders had already cleared the air by giving facts on the issue.

She said she hoped people would stick to the truth.

Also present were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillors and some Village Community Management Councils (MPKK) chairmen.
