KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): A contractor pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court on Friday (March 15) to beating his pet dog with a spade and causing suffering to the animal.

Tan Hsu Maw, 46, was charged before Judge Manira Mohd Nor with cruelly beating the black Rottweiler with the spade at Taman Taynton View in Cheras here at 9.30pm on Nov 18 last year.

The charge under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, punishable also under Section 29(1) of the same Act, provides for a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000 or up to three years' jail or both upon conviction.

Manira set bail at RM6,000 in one surety and ordered Tan to surrender his passport to the court.

The prosecuting officer of the Federal Territory Veterinary Services Department, Hasiah Musa, proposed bail of RM10,000 in two sureties, but Tan's counsel Muhammad Torik Abd Manaf asked for a reduced sum, saying his client was taking care of his two children and aged parents.

The court fixed April 3 for mention of the case. - Bernama
