GEORGE TOWN: For over a week, two brothers said to be physically abused by their father were seen wandering aimlessly at a courtyard of an apartment in Bukit Gambier.

At night, they would sleep over at their friend’s place.

Their ordeal was finally over last Thursday when the apartment’s security guard brought them to the state welfare department’s office in the Caring Society Complex here.

Police detained their father, a 53-year-old driver, on Sunday to facilitate investigation.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Che Zaimani Che Awang said the boys, aged 11 and 13, claimed that they were punched and kicked while staying with their father at a house in Taman Tun Sardon.

“Their left eyes were swollen while the younger brother had a fractured right rib.

“Both victims fled the house on March 1 to avoid further abuse. Their father was at work at that time. They claimed their father would often hit them on their head, face and body for ‘minor mistakes’ at home,” he said.

ACP Che Zaimani said the elder brother claimed he had been beaten since December last year. But since January, he said the younger brother was also abused physically.

He said both of them did not go to school after leaving the house, adding that their mother left them when they were young.

He said the case was being probed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for abuse, which provides for a fine of RM20,000 or a jail term of up to 10 years, or both.
