Policeman charged with rape of 19-year-old

MIRI: A 53-year-old police corporal has been charged with raping a 19-year-old girl in the Sarikei police station's toilet on Oct 28 last year.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Asst Comm Dennis Leong said the suspect pleaded not guilty to two offences when charged at the Sarikei Sessions Court on Feb 27.

The charges were under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 30-year jail sentence and whipping while Section 354 of the same Code carries a maximum 10-year jail sentence and a fine

"He pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted him bail of RM30,000 with two sureties.

"RM8,000 was deposited with the court and his trial will be on June 24 to 28," SAC Leong said in an update on Saturday (March 2).

According to the case file, the girl was on a bus trip from Kuching to Sibu to celebrate her sister's birthday, but missed the bus after using the toilet when they stopped at the Sarikei bus station.

The policeman allegedly offered her a ride to the Sarikei police station, where he is said to have raped her.
