SEMENYIH: As candidates in the Semenyih by-election make their final push to be the next assemblyman, trouble follows close by.
The relatively peaceful campaign period was shaken once again when unknown individuals put up provocative banners against Barisan Nasional.
Its candidate, Zakaria Hanafi, immediately lodged a police report after discovering the banners while on his campaign trail in Beranang town.
In his report, Zakaria said the banners contained words and photos linking him to Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is the wife of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Both Najib and Rosmah are currently facing a slew of corruption charges.
Zakaria stated that he lodged the report on Wednesday (Feb 27) in order for the Election Commission (EC) to take action.
"I have never ordered nor instructed anyone to put up such provocative banners," he said in his report.
Meanwhile, Kajang Deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Sabri Abdullah confirmed receiving a report on the incident, which will be investigated under Section 4(A) of the Election Offences Act 1954 for promoting feelings of ill-will or hostility.
Earlier on Saturday, independent candidate Kuan Chee Heng's camp also lodged a report involving campaign banners.
In the Feb 23 incident, Kuan's aide reported that his banners had been destroyed by an unknown individual.
The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief.
