IPOH: A remembrance ceremony for the 2013 Lahad Datu and Semporna intrusion incident will be held at the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force (GOF) base in Ulu Kinta here on March 1.
VAT 69 deputy commander Asst Comm Abd Rani Alias said the ceremony would be held for the first time to commemorate and remember fallen heroes of the incident six years ago.
“We could only hold it now due to time constraints in the past few years.
“It is also considered to be part of VAT 69's 50th anniversary celebrations, with more events to be held in October,” he told a press conference at the GOF headquarters here Monday (Feb 25).
VAT 69 (Very Able Troopers 69) is a Royal Malaysia Police special forces unit.
ACP Abd Rani, who had led a team of commandoes during the incursion, said the ceremony would see several former top cops attending it.
“Those attending include former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, former Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun, and former Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman.
“It will also be a platform for current VAT 69 members and veterans to meet up and mingle.
“We will also receive a memorial plaque from the Institute of Integrity Malaysia (IIM) while monetary aid will be presented to the family of the two VAT 69 commandoes who were killed during the incident,” he added.
