GEORGE TOWN: The police have seized drugs worth RM556,000 and arrested four men aged between 33 and 49 in three raids on the Penang island and mainland.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigations Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said his department and the Penang Contingent Narcotics Crime Investigations Department conducted the raids in Butterworth on the mainland, and Ayer Itam and Jelutong on the island from 9.20am until 10am on Saturday (Feb 16).
He said police successfully arrested four syndicate members in the raids and seized 33.8kg of heroin, 745gm of heroin base, 44.8kg of caffeine powder, 550gm of chemicals in powder and liquid form and drug processing equipment.
“The total value of drugs seized is RM556,000. We also seized four vehicles valued at RM392,000 and cash totalling RM8,200,” he said.
Comm Mohmad said the suspects have been remanded until Feb 23 to facilitate police investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
He said the drugs seized were believed to be for the consumption of local drug addicts, adding that the drugs seized could cater to 113,000 addicts.
Comm Mohmad said the leader of the syndicate is the 49-year-old suspect that was arrested in Ayer Itam.
“There were no seizures at the second and third places in Ayer Itam and Jelutong. The suspects frequently went in and out of the premise in Butterworth to process the drugs, around two to three times a month,” he added.
