KUANTAN: The moratorium on bauxite mining activities will be lifted in April.

Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar said this means that all existing 435,000 tonnes of bauxite stockpiled at the Kuantan and Kemaman ports must be cleared by March 31.

"We are asking all involved to cooperate with the ministry and the state to get it done in the coming month," he said after inspecting the bauxite mining activities sites here on Monday (Feb 18).

Dr Xavier said the Cabinet had agreed to a new standard operating procedure (SOP) covering all aspects, from mining to exports.

He added that a meeting with stakeholders will be done to ensure all are prepared to abide by the conditions.

"Those who disregard the rules will be heavily penalised. I will strictly enforce this SOP," he said.
