SIBU:  A soldier has been arrested for being in possession of counterfeit notes amounting to RM4,000, which he had printed himself to be used for his wedding.

The 28-year old soldier with the rank of corporal had given the counterfeit money to his fiancee to use for their wedding on March 30.

However, after inspecting the notes, the woman after checking felt they were counterfeit notes.

The soldier told her that the money had been withdrawn from an ATM machine at a bank in Jalan Kampung Nyabor here.

Sibu OCPD  asst comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said Sunday (Feb 17) that the suspect, who has been a soldier for seven years, had indeed withdrawn RM4,000 from his account on Friday (Feb 15).

After being told by his fiancee that the notes that he had given her were not real, he lodged a police report, hoping the bank would replace the counterfeit notes with real ones.

"Our investigation shows that the suspect spent three days printing the counterfeit notes in an office of the army camp in early February," he said.

Following a police report, the suspect was arrested at 7.15pm on Saturday (Feb 16).

The police also seized 55 pieces of RM50 and RM100 counterfeit notes, a genuine RM100 note and a photocopy machine that belongs to the army camp.

The case, ACP Stanley said is being investigated under Section 489 of the Penal Code for in possession of counterfeit notes.
