SEMENYIH: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) sees a silver lining in the alleged disagreements between Umno and PAS over the Semenyih polls.
On a claim by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that PAS would not support Barisan Nasional in Semenyih, PSM candidate Nik Aziz Afiq Abdul is hoping the Islamist party would support him instead.
“Some say that if PAS does not support Barisan in the by-election, it would benefit Pakatan. But I see it as an opportunity for PAS members to vote for PSM.
“I have many friends who are PAS supporters. They do not support Pakatan. And now that there is a question mark over its relationship with Umno, then I am the best candidate for PAS supporters to vote for.
“I am confident that they understand my struggle and will want to support PSM,” said Nik Aziz Afiq at a press conference here during his campaign trail in Semenyih's old town.
Nik Aziz Afiq, 25, is the son of a Selangor PAS member. He was also named after the late PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat.
Meanwhile, PSM central committee member S. Arutchelvan said Dr Mahathir's statement is possibly a political diversion.
“We have heard what Dr Mahathir has said, but we also want to hear PAS’ side of the story.
“But this is a diversion from the real issue here, which is Pakatan already has a huge majority in Selangor. The results of the by-election will not change anything.
“What is important is that we have a strong opposition. And if we vote for opposition parties whose direction is not clear, it is dangerous.
“The relationship between PAS and Umno appears weak and is very unclear. But PSM's direction is very clear, so we feel this development is positive towards PSM,” said Arutchelvan.
On Friday (Feb 15), Dr Mahathir had a meeting with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
Dr Mahathir claims that Abdul Hadi had signed a written statement that PAS would not support Barisan in Semenyih.
This was refuted by Barisan and PAS members.
During the Semenyih by-election nomination day, PAS leaders, including secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, had marched along with Barisan's entourage.
