KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah deputy president Datuk Darell Leiking says they would leave it to party president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to react to the move by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to set up shop in Sabah.

“It is best you wait for the Chief Minister (Shafie) to say what is needed,” said the International Trade and Industry Minister, who declined to comments on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision.

Leiking, who was speaking to reporters in Penampang on Saturday (Feb 16), said there had been no special meetings by senior party leaders, although they met as usual during the weekends to discuss developments.

“These were usual meetings.

"It was just a coincidence. We discussed the latest political developments to explain to the people what’s happening in Sabah,” he said.

"There is a lot of negativity in the latest news, especially about who will be joining the party that is coming to Sabah," he added, without naming former Umno lawmakers who are widely tipped to join Bersatu soon.

“I understand that both Sabah PKR and Sabah DAP have made statements. Just be patient. Shafie will make his statement,” Leiking said.

Shafie’s view on Bersatu coming to Sabah had been widely reported before it became a reality.

“But sometimes, what we say, they do something else. What is important is who is joining them,” Shafie had said, adding that these former former Umno leaders had fought against Warisan and its partners during the general elections.

“They are now using another way to come into the government,” he said.

Leiking said the move was unlikely to affect the Warisan-led state government, as Dr Mahathir had indicated that those from Umno joining Bersatu in Peninsular Malaysia would not be given positions in the federal government.

“For Sabah, I believe it is for Shafie to decide,” he added.
