BUTTERWORTH (Bernama):  A temple caretaker, angry after being reprimanded over burning rubbish openly, ran amok and attacked two men with a meat cleaver at Wat Siam Mak Mandin here.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said in the 6.30pm incident on Sunday (Feb 10), one of the men sustained injuries in the head and needed 17 stitches, while another was wounded in the right hand.

“The 57-year-old temple caretaker was burning rubbish at an open area behind the temple and the two men reprimanded him over his action before asking him to put out the fire.

“This has caused him to lose his temper and attacked the two men with a meat cleaver. Both injured men were sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment,” he said here on Monday (Feb 11).

The suspect was detained by the police at 11pm at the same hospital when he was there to seek treatment for minor injuries, he said.

The police also found that he had six previous criminal records and was under the influence of alcohol during the incident.  The case was being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine or whipping, upon conviction. - Bernama
