ISKANDAR PUTERI: A 38-year-old Nepali worker was killed after being run over by a prime mover truck at Jalan Utama Dermaga, Tanjung Pelepas Port here.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said that the victim, identified as Gautam Jhamka Prassad, was crossing the main road at about 4.20am on Sunday (Feb 10).

“Initial investigations had revealed that the victim was crossing the main road at the peak hour of container loading works.

“The victim was hit by the truck from the right side after it made a U-turn," he said in a statement.

ACP Dzulkhairi added that the victim suffered critical injuries to the head and body.

The victim was pronounced dead by a medical officer who arrived at the scene.

The body of the victim was brought over to Kulai Hospital for a postmortem.

ACP Dzulkhairi said there was ample lighting at the road and the weather condition was good during the incident.

The case was investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987.

According to Johor Occupational Safety and Health Department (Dosh) director Dasuki Mohd Heak, the victim had been working at the port for less than a year.

“Dosh is currently investigating the cause of the incident and had ordered a stop-work order to the truck driver and the vehicle to help investigations,” he said in a statement.

He added that Dosh views every accident seriously, especially those involving workers, the public or property.

Dasuki added that such accidents could have been avoided if employers followed comprehensive risk assessment and implemented safety measures outlined in the Guidelines for Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC).
