Army man is prime suspect behind snatch theft spree

MELAKA: Police here have detained a 23-year-old army man they say is the prime suspect behind a spate of snatch thefts in the state, as well as his 18-year-old accomplice.

Melaka CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Nor Yhazid Idris said the duo was

detained on Jan 5 under “Ops Rentas” that carried out weeks of intelligence-gathering to identify culprits preying on women and senior citizens here.

He said the two men have been remanded until Feb 12 to assist investigations under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

ACP Mohd Nor added that the suspects also tested positive for drugs.

“We believe we have solved six snatch theft cases involving mostly female

victims with the arrest of the two, and that further investigation would reveal

whether they were involved in other similar cases,” he told The Star here on Saturday (Feb 9).
