Model’s handsewn creations are so Instagrammable

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian model Sheena Liam’s (pic) hand embroidered artwork has been featured by Instagram on its feed and Insta Stories platform.

The 27-year-old Penangite’s artwork was posted by Instagram’s own account and in nine Insta Stories of the photo and video-sharing social networking service yesterday.

She recreates self-portraits with her signature dark green thread on canvas.

According to the post on Instagram, Liam “learned the basics (of her artwork) from her mother as a child and picked up her needle and thread to stay occupied during her commute and in her free time”.

“I’m not a person who can sit idle,” said Liam, who now lives in New York City.

“The Internet introduced me to artists with new and contemporary ways of approaching the medium.

“It made me realise the potential of embroidery beyond the traditional,” she said.

She also held her first solo exhibition at the Item Gallery in Paris last year, which featured all her completed works in one place for the first time.

Liam was the first Malaysian to win the reality TV series Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 2 in 2014.

She was also part of The Star’s BRATs 2005 programme in Langkawi, which has been training aspiring young journalists since 1993.
