PETALING JAYA: Teresa Kok has filed a defamation suit against Selangor PAS Youth chief Syarhan Humaizi Abdul Halim over his posting on social media, which she claims paints her as being anti-Islam.
In the suit filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Feb 4, the Primary Industries Minister is seeking damages from Syarhan over the alleged defamatory post on his Facebook page.
The suit comes after Syarhan ignored Kok’s demands for a public apology and a retraction of the post, issued in a letter from her lawyers on Jan 23.
In her statement of demand, Kok, who is also Seputeh MP, alleged that Syarhan’s post on Jan 19, titled “Ucapan YB Ustaz Khalil Benar: DAP Jangan Kurang Ajar (Ustaz Khalil’s speech was true, DAP do not be rude)”, contained “defamatory words, libel, and lies”.
Syarhan’s post made references to another allegedly defamatory article titled “Teresa Kok Tidak Setuju Islam Agama Rasmi Persekutuan (Teresa Kok does not agree to Islam being the official religion of the Federation)”.
The post and the article, Kok said, includes false and libellous claims that she was anti-Islam, a racist and a bigot, extremist, a criminal, and a dishonest person who is ineligible to hold the post of a Cabinet member, among others.
The writ filed by Kok’s lawyers did not state the sum of damages sought by her.
However, the previous letter of demand included a claim for RM30mil in reparations.
