KOTA KINABALU: Many Sabah government-linked companies (GLCs) are facing financial problems, discrepancies in their accounts and management issues, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He added the most recent issues involved Yayasan Sabah Group-owned Benta Wawasan.
“The company has come out to explain the cause and they’ve rectified the matter,” he said after launching Sabah’s new football jersey on Sunday (Jan 27).
He said the main focus of the government in solving these issues was to get to the bottom of the problem and to find solutions.
“If the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) wants to come and conduct investigations, they are free to do so,” added Shafie.
In the case of Benta Wawasan, it was found that the previous state government had channelled RM750 million to the company but only RM30 million remained.
The state government had also given 150,000ha of land to Benta Wawasan for development but only 40,000ha was utilised with 25,000ha planted with oil palm.
“Where is the remaining 110,000 ha?” Shafie asked during a function with the company on Saturday (Jan 26).
On another matter, Shafie said the state government was mulling the idea of setting up permanent shelters that can be used during disasters such as floods.
“We want centres that are fixed, with facilities built in and are located at strategic locations because we cannot keep using schools or halls when disaster strikes,” he said.
However, he explained that thorough deliberation and time was needed for these shelters to materialise.
Districts in Sabah are hit by floods at least twice a year annually due to the monsoon season and changes in weather patterns.
Many of those hit are poor villagers or families from middle income groups that find it hard to rebuild damaged homes.
