PETALING JAYA: Social gatherings between members of the judiciary and lawyers do not jeopardise the integrity, impartiality of administration of justice, says the Malaysian Bar.

Its president George Varughese condemned attempts to politicise the gala dinner organised by the Sabah Law Society in Kota Kinabalu on Friday (Jan 18), which saw top judges, the Attorney General, the Chief Justice, the Law Minister and lawyers sharing a dance on stage.

"The warm camaraderie between members of the Judiciary, the Attorney General's Chambers and the Bar does not in any way jeopardise the integrity and impartiality of the administration of justice.

"The Judiciary remains wholly independent in carrying out its role of dispensing justice, and is not compromised as a result of such social events," he said in a statement on Monday (Jan 21).

Varughese also described the calls for the resignations of the Chief Justice and the Attorney General as well as for the Chief Justice to be referred to a tribunal for alleged misconduct as "utterly erroneous, misplaced and unwarranted".

"Social gatherings and events involving various or all stakeholders in the administration of justice, where the participants interact in an informal setting, are far from new, and have been commonplace occasions for numerous years.

"The Malaysian Bar condemns all attempts to politicise this innocuous social event," he said.
