GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan is planning to set up party branches in Sarawak, says party president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau.
He said the party was mulling over the move as there has been a request from people in Sarawak for branches there.
"Some of the non-governmental organisations in the state had met and told us to set up branches. The party is receptive to the idea as long as it's in line with the objectives and values it stands for," said Dr Lau.
He said this after chairing a central working committee (CWC) meeting at the state Gerakan headquarters on Saturday (Jan 19).
Dr Lau said it was not bound by the agreement not to spread its wings to Sarawak since the party was not in Barisan Nasional any more.
"We are willing to work with anyone who subscribes to our ideology of a fair and just society.
Dr Lau said the CWC meeting was held in Penang as the party had made a decision to have such meetings in the states on a rotation basis.
"The move was to get closer to the grassroots members in the states to strengthen the party," he added.
