CAMERON HIGHLANDS: A live debate between by-election candidates here next week will be a level playing field for them to share their plans for the voters, says the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0).

Its chairman Thomas Fann said each participant would be given an equal amount of time to share their aspirations, while hoping to encourage a better political culture.

“The two independents who can’t reach out to a large crowd will get their chances here.

“The voters will then see and hear for themselves what the participants have to say before they decide and cast their vote on polling day,” he told The Star on Friday (Jan 18).

The live debate, themed "What changes does Cameron Highlands need?", will take place at the Heritage Hotel in Tanah Rata here on Wednesday (Jan 23).

It will be broadcast live over Astro Awani and TV1 at 9pm.

The confirmed participants are Pakatan Harapan’s M. Manogaran and the two independents Wong Seng Yee and Sallehudin Ab Talib.

Fann said he hoped that Barisan Nasional’s Ramli Mohd Nor, who at this point is not taking part, would change his mind.

“We have sent a word out to him. We will not make him uncomfortable or push him into a corner,” he added.

The Cameron Highlands by-election will be held on Jan 26.
