PEKAN: Sultan Abdullah Ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah is now the Ruler of Pahang.

Sultan Abdullah took the oath at 11.16am yesterday and with three hails of “Allahuakhbar” (Allah is Great) and another three of “Daulat Tuanku”, he was proclaimed the sixth modern Sultan of Pahang.

He would henceforth rule under the regnal name Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah.

According to the Sultan’s private secretary, Col Nazim Mohd Alim, the address carried the meaning of “Sultan Abdullah as the protector of Islam who is chosen by Allah”.

Sultan Abdullah succeeded his father Sultan Ahmad Shah who was reported to be ill and abdicated the throne after reigning for nearly 45 years.

Article 9A of the amended state constitution empowers the royal council to conduct the abdication of a Ruler due to health conditions.

The proclamation ceremony was attended by members of the Pahang royal family, state executive councillors, assemblymen and heads of government departments.

Also present were Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who is the Pekan MP and an Orang Besar Berempat, and Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The modern era of the Pahang Sultanate can be traced back to 1882 when the Raja Bendahara known as Wan Ahmad took the title of Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu’adzam Shah after defeating his brother in a civil war. Two of his sons ruled the state successively as Sultan Mahmud and Sultan Abdullah Al-Mu’tassim Billah.

The sultanate was continued by Sultan Abu Bakar and later by Sultan Ahmad Shah from 1974 onwards.

With Sultan Abdullah’s accession, he is eligible to be one of the candidates for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s post.

After the Sultan of Kelantan, the next in line in the rotation of the nine Malay Rulers are the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan of Johor and Sultan of Perak respectively.
