PETALING JAYA: Nancy Cake Ipoh's renowned cake maker Nancy Chong has died at the age of 90.
For many years, the butter cakes and cupcakes made by Nancy Cake Ipoh brought much joy to families in Ipoh – and sometimes beyond.
Nancy Cake Ipoh is a local business run by Chong's family from their private residence.
When contacted by The Star, the family confirmed her passing but declined to comment.
Many who bought her cakes spoke fondly of her and expressed their sincere condolences.
On Friday (Jan 10), Tray Cafe founder Dinesh Rao shared a picture of him with Chong in an Insta Story on his Instagram page @myasiankitchen.
The caption in the post read "RIP Nancy Poh Poh. You have been more than just a baker to many. You're like a grandma, always there providing comfort through the most amazing butter cake."
"My parents have been ordering cakes from her since my first birthday and I'm already 39," told The Star.
"She was very friendly and kind. I remember she would always smile and greet us at the door and even walk us out to our car."
The news of her recent passing was also shared via the "We Love Ipoh-City of Good Food" Facebook page, which has 7,521 members.
A Facebook post by Amy Wong read, "Just heard the news that our Legendary Butter Cake Baker Nancy Chong passed away at the age of 90. Deepest condolences & heartfelt sympathy to her family. May her soul rest in peace".
Many said her cakes were the best in Ipoh.
Thila VK commented, "I still think nobody can beat her. Her cakes are the best in Ipoh. May her soul rest in peace. Deepest sympathy to her family & friends."
Another commenter added, "Nancy Chong's signature butter cake and icing are simply awesome. Nothing quite matches Nancy Chong's cakes. May her sweet soul rest in peace."
From a comment by Ming Kong Yau Billy, it is learned that she passed away on Monday and the funeral was held on Thursday (Jan 10).
The post has since gained 89 reactions, 73 comments and 17 shares as at 3.24pm Friday (Jan 11).
