ISKANDAR PUTERI: State DAP member Mohammad Kamarul Ariffin Harris Fadzillah, who posted an insulting comment about Tunku Mahkota Johor on Facebook, has resigned from his position as a councillor at the Pontian Municipal Council.
Mohammad Kamarul tendered his resignation on Tuesday, said state Local Government, Science and Technology Committee chairman Tan Hong Pin.
Tan, who is also Johor DAP secretary, said both the state government and Pontian Municipal Council had accepted his resignation.
He also said Mohammad Kamarul has apologised to Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim and the Johor royal family over his statement.
Asked if Mohammad Kamarul would be brought before the DAP disciplinary board over his Facebook post, Tan said that the matter was already resolved following the latter’s apology and resignation.
He said Johor DAP would be holding a meeting at the end of this month to find a replacement.
Mohamad Kamarul in the now-deleted posting had questioned whether Tunku Ismail’s recent apology for any mistakes he had made last year was to divert attention from the conversion of Pulau Kukup to Sultanate land.
He also asked for the land to be “returned to the people”.
Pulau Kukup, located off the coast of Pontian, recently came under the spotlight after a gazette dated Oct 25 about the state authorities cancelling its status as a protected national park went viral on social media.
A letter dated Dec 5, which carried the signature of Sultan Ibrahim, later made clear that Pulau Kukup would remain a national park despite its status being changed to “Sultanate land” under the Sultanate Land Enactment.
