KOTA KINABALU: A full investigation is underway over a couple pictured skinny dipping at a fountain in the city’s popular Gaya Street.
The Kota Kinabalu City Hall is trying to establish whether the blurry picture, which has been circulated on various social media platforms, happened at its central business district.
“We are carrying out a full investigation into the incident,” Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Nordin Siman told reporters yesterday.
“We have yet to verify it. We are trying to check whether the picture is genuine.”
Nordin said they viewed the matter seriously as it was not proper for such incidents to occur.
In the picture, the couple – believed to be tourists – are seen hugging each other while topless at a roundabout fountain pond along the city’s famous street.
Although it is not known exactly when the picture was taken, it is widely believed to be after midnight when most businesses in the area had closed.
City Hall is expected to increase surveillance by deploying more enforcement officers on the ground and to check footage of CCTVs at various areas to establish whether the incident really occurred.
Gaya Street is a popular area for tourists to hang out.
This is not the first time tourists have taken dips in the fountain, prompting city authorities to put up signs warning against such acts.
Of late, tourists have stirred anger among locals due to their antics, from going topless at the summit of Mount Kinabalu to dancing in front of the city mosque.
The locals have urged authorities to take stern action against such tourists.
