CHIEF executive officer Dr Lee Weng Keng of Sunway Group’s Education and Healthcare Division recently received the Darjah Kebesaran Dato’ Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah (DSIS) award on Dec 11.
Datuk Dr Lee was among the 114 royally chosen recipients of state honours.
Only 25 individuals out of 791 nominations were selected to receive awards and medals in conjunction with the 73rd birthday celebration of Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
Datuk Dr Lee first joined Sunway as general manager of operations in 1994, and by 1996 he was appointed Sunway College executive board member to spearhead the development of its education unit.
In 2001, he was appointed chief executive officer of Sunway Building Technology Bhd, a main board public-listed company in Malaysia.
As a Sunway Group representative, he was the key person involved in developing and working with Monash University to set up Malaysia’s first foreign university campus – Monash University Sunway Campus – in 1998.
Datuk Dr Lee served as executive director of Monash University Malaysia for seven years. During the interim, he led in its development and expansion, including building the new purpose-built campus and the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
He is a founding board member of Monash University Malaysia, chairman of the board of directors in several institutions under the Sunway Education Group and Sunway Medical Centre, co-chair of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Management Committee and sits on the board of the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute and Sunway University.
In 2014, Datuk Dr Lee was conferred the Monash University honoris causa degree in Doctor of Laws, in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to Sunway Group and as a business management expert,” as highlighted by Chancellor of Monash University Dr Alan Finkel, “as well as his interest in Monash University and invaluable contribution to the development of Monash University Malaysia.”
Datuk Dr Lee also received commendations for his leadership.
He was instrumental in the expansion of the Sunway's education and healthcare divisions, and in sustaining high standards of quality and excellence.
“A well-deserved recognition of a true Sunway leader who exudes the very values of humility, integrity and excellence in all that he does for all that he has been entrusted with in the Sunway Group,” said Sunway Education Group and Sunway University’s senior executive director Dr Elizabeth Lee.
Prior to joining Sunway, Datuk Dr Lee was attached to Texas Instruments (M) Sdn Bhd as a materials manager. He eventually worked his way to being the company’s first local director back in the late 80s.
Looking at his achievements, one would hardly know that Datuk Dr Lee began his career as a school teacher.
