GEORGE TOWN: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has expressed empathy for fellow father and Cabinet Minister Mohamad Sabu whose son was detained by the police for a drug-related offence.
Father-of-four Lim said while it was difficult being a minister, it was sometimes even harder being a parent.
“I sympathise with his predicament and extend my support to him as a father. I want him to know that we are with him.
“I also commend his openness in addressing the matter. Everyone is subjected to the same laws,” Lim told reporters yesterday at the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce. He was there to announce the 2019 Chinese New Year open house which he would be co-hosting with the organisation for the first time.
Lim also urged that Mohamad’s family be given space to handle the issue.
“I understand this as my family and children have been targeted before. My son was also once accused of groping a schoolmate, which was proven to be fake,” he said.
Lim said in this instance, the matter would be best left to the authorities to act in accordance with the law.
On Saturday, Defence Minister Mohamad confirmed that his son Ahmad Saiful Islam Mohamad was arrested by the police during an anti-vice raid that day in Kuala Lumpur.
“Following this arrest, my family and I have left the matter entirely to the authorities to act in accordance with the process of the law,” said Mohamad, who also has four children.
It is learnt that Ahmad Saiful was picked up by a joint team involving the Dang Wangi Narcotics Crime Investigation Department and its Secret Society, Gaming and Vice Division (D7).
During the raid early Saturday in the Jalan Ampang area, 101 people were screened for drugs.
Ahmad Saiful was among two detained for testing positive, according to sources close to the investigation.
