PETALING JAYA: The Pakatan Harapan government cannot rely on making promises and selling hope to steer the country, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president said the government needs to apply good governance and work hard in a pragmatic way for the country to move forward steadily.
“Political achievements are not about promises and selling hope. It only comes with good governance and pragmatic hard work," said Dr Wee
Dr Wee added that he was happy to see the Pakatan government deliver on promises, such as the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and increasing oil royalties for Sabah and Sarawak.
“When each of these promises is implemented, it means a new era for the country. However, we have found that the promises made before the 14th general election were all in vain and made for the sake of promising," he said.
In a Facebook post on Monday (Dec 31), Dr Wee said the Pakatan leaders have made u-turns on many policies.
“They have been busy with party defections, misusing public resources to persecute political enemies and they have been derelict in their duties," he added.
He also called on the Chinese community to allow Opposition parties like MCA to provide a check-and-balance on the government.
Dr Wee said that whenever MCA questioned or criticised government policies, some community leaders would question the party by asking what they did for the last 60 years.
“I hear them all and I understand that MCA must have been inadequate in the past. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have lost so badly (in GE14).
"However, as we move, do we wish for the country to continue on its old path or a wide and free road?" he asked.
Dr Wee also thanked MCA members for sticking around, adding that the party has a long and difficult road ahead, especially when facing DAP due to its strength in the Chinese community
“We must be more courageous and determined in our own direction. We will continue to expand through participation in forums and challenging debates," he said.
“Let the scars become our medals of growth,” added Dr Wee.
