KOTA KINABALU: A scrap metal collector (pic) was arrested by the police on suspicion of stealing power cables belonging to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) in Alam Mesra here.

District police chief Asst Comm Habibi Majinji said the 31-year-old man from Pulau Gaya was detained at about 3.30pm Wednesday (Dec 26), following a report lodged by a security guard patrolling the area.

"The guard witnessed the suspect cutting the power cables while he was on patrol duty.

"The suspect fled the scene just as the guard was about to apprehend him. He hid on the ceiling of an electrical substation building in Alam Mesra.

"He was arrested within 24 hours of the report being made," he added.

ACP Habibi said police confiscated a set of pliers, a voltage tester and a brown wallet from the suspect.

The case is being probed under Section 379/511 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery.
