24-hour flood hotline set up in northern Sarawak

MIRI: A 24-hour flood hotline has been activated in northern Sarawak in case of floods here.

The Civil Defence Unit is manning the hotline (Tel: 085-430 389) at its regional head office in Miri.

Miri Civil Defence said Friday (Dec 21) that the hotline would make it easier and faster for flood victims to get help.

"The hotline is set up in view of the monsoon now. Those affected by floods can call this hotline anytime.

"They can report to the nearest district office (during office hours) or call the hotline for help since the line is manned 24 hours a day," said the Miri Civil Defence spokesman.

In the meantime, the Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department stated that the latest river level readings were high statewide.

The map showing purple dots for dangerous and blue dots for high water levels showed the situation at 11.30am Friday (Dec 21).

Many parts of Sarawak are facing heavy rain as the monsoon season (or landas in local Sarawak dialect) enters its peak.
