PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) has been accused of bribing Umno delegates to vote for him in as president during the party election in June.
A report on this has been lodged with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
It is still unclear how much money was involved and how many delegates allegedly received bribes.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operation) Datuk Seri Azam Baki confirmed that the report was lodged on Friday (Dec 12).
“We are looking into it. We will investigate and if necessary, call him in for questioning if there are elements of corruption," he said.
Zahid became president after he won 99 divisions and 39,197 popular votes while Khairy Jamaluddin won 61 divisions and 32,592 votes.
In an interview prior to the Umno presidential polls, Ahmad Zahid said the party had to eradicate the culture of warlords and money politics.
He said money politics was a problem that had been brought up for many years, even leading to Umno splitting into two in 1987.
Zahid also said that despite efforts to eradicate money politics, it “may still exist”.
Meanwhile, he is currently facing 46 charges of CBT (criminal breach of trust), graft and money laundering.
These are: 11 counts of CBT involving RM20.8mil, eight corruption charges over RM21.3mil and 27 money laundering charges linked to RM72mil.
