The cases accounted for about 5% of the total of 309 of theft cases – up from 103 during the same period last year.

Police urged the bird’s nest operators to fence up their premises and install surveillance systems to combat the menace.

> A nine-year-old boy tried to run away from home but landed on a rack mounted with an air-conditioner.

This was all because he refused to do his homework, China Press reported.

The boy from Linyi city, Shandong province, reportedly could not stand the nagging by his aunt for not concentrating on his homework.

The aunt failed to locate him in their 20th storey apartment unit until a neighbour discovered the boy sitting on the rack outside a 19th-storey unit.

The boy said he was looked after by his aunt while his parents worked in another city in China.

He said the aunt beat him because he did not do well in his studies.

Hsiao then said in the accompanying message: “The storm will stop because we are all in this together.”
