PETALING JAYA:The Selangor Menteri Besar's political secretary has reprimanded Khalid Abdul Samad (pic) for suggesting that local council elections be conducted first in Shah Alam.
"I think it would be wise and reasonable for the Federal Territories Minister to refer to the state government before issuing any statements in relation to local council relations, especially involving Shah Alam, which is the administrative center of Selangor.
"Khalid Samad's position as its MP is acknowledged, so it is only appropriate if he first referred to the state government as it involves many parties, including civil servants," Borhan Aman Shah said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 12).
Khalid is the MP for Shah Alam and also the Federal Territories Minister.
Previously, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said there would be no local council elections, as it could lead to race-related conflicts in the country.
However, Malay Mail reported that Khalid had suggested bringing the local council elections to Shah Alam, as it was a place where the race card could not be used. This is the city has a large Malay majority.
Borhan added that Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari was well aware of Dr Mahathir's statement, and of Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, who wanted to conduct a comprehensive study first.
"I hope all parties can be more responsible before issuing any statement that involves the well-being of the Selangor people," he said.
Borhan added that the state government was committed to improving the socio-economic status of the people, while also maintaining the well being of the state.
