KOTA KINABALU: Newly independent politician Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee will remain as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman, until Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad decides whether he should vacate the seat.

Kiandee was one of five Sabah Umno MPs to leave the party on Tuesday (Dec 11), to become independents who are Pakatan-Harapan friendly.

The Pakatan manifesto had stated that the PAC chairman must be from the Opposition, as a way of reforming Parliament.

Following his departure from Umno, Beluran MP Kiandee said he will let Dr Mahathir decide on his status as PAC chairman.

"I'll just leave it to the Prime Minister, because the appointment comes from him.

"But once the chairman resigns, the PAC cannot hold meetings anymore. I would be doing an injustice to the commitee if I vacate the seat now while Parliament is still in session," he explained.

Lawyer Syahredzan Johan has also weighted in on the issue. He stated that since Kiandee has quit Umno, he should also resign as PAC Chairman.
