Don't use racial strife as excuse not to hold local council elections, say civil society groups

Local council elections are called the 'third vote' after elections for federal and state governments.

PETALING JAYA: Local council elections should be restored and the government should not use possible racial conflict as an excuse not to have them, say civil society groups.

The decision not to go ahead with plans to reintroduce local elections was “disappointing”, said Gan Ping Sieu, co-president of think tank Centre For A Better Tomorrow (Cenbet).
