SIBU: A former Sarawakian MP was cheated of RM8,000 for a tourism package that did not exist.

According to Sibu Deputy OCPD Supt Martin Koo, the 67-year-old victim said a priest from Bintangor told him in June that a church would be organising a trip to Europe in conjunction with its 100-year anniversary.

"The package, which cost RM12,500 per person was for a trip to Rome, Italy, Lourdes, France and Fatima, Portugal.

"The victim and his wife were attracted by the package and called up an agent who advised them to make payment to a bank account," he added.

The victim banked in the amount on Nov 9.

Supt Koo said after making the payment, the victim tried to call the agent again but could not get through.

It was only then that he realised that he had been cheated.

Supt Koo said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

It is understood that the priest who told the former MP about the tour package was not aware it was a scam.
