PEKAN NENAS: A 39-year-old caretaker at a reflexology centre here was sentenced to three years' jail and three strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here for hiring illegal immigrants.
Judge Zahilah Mohammad Yusoff sentenced Cheah Hong Loon after she found him guilty of hiring seven foreign women.
The women, comprising five Thai and two Vietnamese nationals were all working as masseuses.
According to the charge, Cheah hired seven foreigners with no valid passes to work at his business premises in Bandar Sri Alam.
They were detained at the premises at about 6.15pm on July 5.
The caretaker was charged under Section 55B(1) of the Immigration Act, read together with Section 55B(3) of the same Act, which allowed for a maximum five-year jail sentence and six strokes of the cane.
The accused was represented by lawyer Rajvinder Singh while immigration deputy public prosecutor Noridayu Md Kassim prosecuted.
The case was held at a special court at the Pekan Nenas immigration detention centre here.
