KOTA KINABALU: Five people including a baby were killed in a mishap while travelling from Sandakan to Kudat on Friday evening.

The five were among 41 people who were travelling in a bus when the accident occurred along the Marak Parak road near Ranau-Kota Marudu at about 4pm.

The 41 people comprise staff and lecturers of a polytechnic. Together with their families, they were heading home from a family day programme when tragedy struck.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operation chief Khatizah Rahaban said a team was sent to the scene following a distress call at 4.28pm.

"The bus was believed to have skidded off the road before crashing into a road divider," she said in a statement.

It is believed the driver of the bus had lost control of the vehicle.

Khatizah said four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene while the baby died at the Kota Marudu Hospital.

The other victims who sustained injuries were sent to hospitals in Kota Marudu and Ranau for treatment.

According to Bernama, seven passengers were severely injured, while 29 others escaped with minor injuries.
