IPOH (Bernama): Calling former Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir as a witness to to a Perak Public Accounts Committee (PAC) public hearing into the financial records of Mentri Besar Incorporated (MB Inc) was not something done arbitrarily said PAC chairman Leong Cheok Keng.

He said all the PAC members had agreed at the PAC meeting on Nov 15, to ask former MB Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir and MB Inc former CEO Datuk Aminuddin Hashim to attend the hearing on Nov 26.

The sole exception was Datuk Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib (BN-Slim), who was absent.

“All of us agreed at the meeting to call YB Zambry as the main witness at the public hearing on Nov 26,” he told a press conference Tuesday (Nov 20).

Leong dismissed the accusation by PAC member Datuk Aznel Ibrahim (BN-Pengkalan Hulu) that he had acted "arbitrarily" without the knowledge of the other PAC members.

Leong, the DAP assemblyman for Malim Nawar, said no one objected to the decision at the Nov 15 meeting.

“I will not be influenced by political considerations.

"And I hope the other PAC members will also not be influenced as well and will act in a more professional and independent manner.

“I acted as the chairman of the PAC and not as a DAP member.

"I wish to emphasise that I acted as the PAC chairman elected by the Perak legislative assembly,” he said.

The Perak PAC comprises Leong, as chairman; Chong Zhemin (DAP-Keranji), as deputy chairman; Aznel (BN-Pengkalan Hulu); Mohd Khusairi (BN-Slim); Yahaya Mat Nor (Amanah-Pasir Panjang); Ng Shy Ching (PKR-Teja) and Razman Zakaria (PAS-Gunung Semanggol).

In short, the PAC has an equal number of representatives from the ruling Pakatan (three from DAP, PKR and Amanah) and the opposition (three from BN and PAS).

Leong said he hopes that Zambry and Aminuddin will cooperate by attending the hearing.

“They are being called as witnesses, not as accused or suspects.

"As such, there is no question of saying this is a politically motivated kind of public hearing,” he said.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10am on Nov 26 at the operations rooms of Bangunan Perak Darul  Ridzuan here.

On Monday (Nov 19), PAC member Aznel called a press conference where he accused Leong of jumping the gun in summoning Zambry and Aminuddin to the hearing.

Aznel claimed that Leong had voiced his suggestion to call for a public hearing but the committee members felt that the matter must be discussed first, because the session could only be carried out if the PAC had a "solid" basis to look into the matter.
