MELAKA: A "runaway" garbage trucks mowed down a tourist in the lane next to Princess Hang Li Poh Well in Bandar Hilir here, killing the 59-year-old on the spot at 8.50am on Saturday (Nov 10).

The victim, identified as Gong Jinge from Hunan, China, had just arrived in Melaka and was part of a tour group.

The 38-year-old truck driver is said to have parked his vehicle along the lane when he decided to alight while waiting for his co-workers who were collecting garbage in the area.

For some reason, the truck started to move on its own.

After hitting the tourist, it rammed into a car and a tourist bus parked on the same side of the lane.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Afzanizar Ahmad said the incident was being probed under Section 41 (1)(A) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He said the 21-year-old driver of the car and 47-year-old bus driver escaped unhurt.

The truck driver had to undergo a blood test at the Melaka Hospital.
