PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) has warned that "selfish" and "power hungry" leaders within Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) may turn the party into another Umno.

In a video posted on Bersatu's Facebook page on Friday, Dr Mahathir admitted that in the early days of the party, some members were appointed rather than elected to their positions in the hope that they could contribute to building the party.

However, he said some leaders had been a let down when given power in the party, becoming selfish and power hungry.

“Later, we found out when they already became leaders, they are the type to save (only) themselves.

"They don’t allow other admissions (into the party) and think it is better to have fewer people as members so that they can remain as leaders," said Dr Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairman.

“That is a challenge and that is dangerous for us.

"If we have selfish characteristics while in our post, this party will become like Umno and will eventually be rejected by the people,” he added.

Dr Mahathir also spoke about complaints of several party leaders who had been accused of ignoring members’ grievances.

“That is their opinion. There are some people who will be heard, and some who won’t be.

“We have many leaders who are now busy trying to heal and restore the nation’s coffers.

"If we take the time to listen to complaints and if that is their fight, it is hard for us to spare them much time," he added.
