Man gets 12 years' jail, 10 strokes of rotan for drug possession

GEORGE TOWN: A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years' jail and ordered to be given 10 strokes of the rotan by a High Court here after he pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of drug possession.

Mohd Shahril Ismail admitted to possessing 17.3g of heroin and 9g of monoacetylmorphine at a house in Bukit Mertajam at around 9.45am on March 7, 2017.

He was originally jointly charged with four others with two counts of drug trafficking.

The four - Mohd Yusof Sa'at, 44, Ramlan Abdul Rahman, 49, Muhammad Izzat Farhan Kamal, 20, and Hearnees Zulkafli, 33 - were all acquitted and discharged when the case came up for decision on Thursday (Nov 1).
