KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The estimated gay population of 310,000 in this country has not been verified by the Health Ministry, says the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).

However, its Family, Social, and Community Division senior assistant director Dr Mohd Izwan Md Yusof said Jakim is committed to helping the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community especially gays, who want to reform, by providing information and counselling.

"Jakim is committed to educating them through seminars and camps,” he said in a statement here on Tuesday (Oct 30).

He added that Jakim also urged the public to work together to strengthen the family institution and monitor their children as well as provide religious education.

On Monday (Oct 29), Jakim revealed that the number of gays in Malaysia was an estimated 310,000 compared with 173,000 five years ago.

Dr Mohd Izwan told a seminar organised by Jakim on the topic that the number of gay men in Malaysia had more than doubled in the last five years.

He had also said that the transgender population in Malaysia had increased from 10,000 in 1988 to 30,000 this year. - Bernama
