Cops refuse hefty RM15,000 bribe, arrest suspected bike thief instead

KUALA LUMPUR: The integrity of seven policemen were tested when a suspected bike thief allegedly offered them a RM15,000 to look the other way.

According to Asst Comm Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon, the seven policemen were on a routine patrol when they came across the 32-year-old suspect in a car park near the Sri Penara flats on Thursday (Oct 18) afternoon.

"When checked, the suspect was found with tools used to steal motorcycles in his bag," he said.

He said the suspect then allegedly tried to convince the policemen to let him go by offering them about RM15,000 in cash, which he had with him at the time.

ACP Mohamed Mokhsein added that he would personally recommend the seven policemen for letters of appreciation from the Kuala Lumpur police chief.

Follow-up investigations on the suspect showed that he had three previous records for criminal offences.

"The suspect led the police to three other motorcycles. At least five stolen motorcycle cases have been solved with this arrest," he said at a press conference on Friday (Oct 19) at the Salak South police station.

However ACP Mohamed Mokhsein said that they believe that the suspect was just part of a group and an investigation is underway to identify other accomplices.

He added that investigators were also looking at why the suspect was carrying such a large amount of cash when he was arrested.
